Goering vs Saddam

I remember reading accounts of the way the US Army handled Herman Goering after he was captured at the end of WWII, especially Gilbert’s Nuremberg Diary. There was a press conference that he had where, bedecked in his Luftwaffe uniform, save the gold baton, answered questions reporters had about his involvement in the rise and fall of the Third Reich. However, toward the end of the interview, the beguiling and humorous Goering turned more solemn and obstinate when questions about his involvement in Hitler’s Final Solution surfaced. Ultimately, Goering cheated the death he deserved by chewing on a cyanide tablet. But in the months leading up to his untimely demise, Goering, in the hands of his captors, reminds me of how Saddam Hussein is performing with his American and Allied jailers in Iraq.

The similarities of Goering and Saddam are interesting:

· Both sanctioned mass murder
· Both provided material, financial, and political means for mass murder
· Both have denied complicity or responsibility for their involvement in mass murder
· Both have psychological profiles of crippling dementia, megalomania, recalcitrance, delusions of grandeur, and profound self-deception
· Both demanded to be recognized as legitimate even after capture and incarceration (Saddam has not been put on trial yet – ultimately will be found guilty of all the same crimes as Goering and that lot – Humanity, Peace, etc., unless the case is tried by the Michael Jackson jury!)

The most salient difference in these two men is that the Saddam was Iraq’s #1 - the Dinars literally stopped with him, while and Goering on the other hand, imagined he was.

Still, the press is much different today then in 1945. There has not been a despot in recent memory that was called a despot by the press. (Chrissy Amanpour had trouble calling Ceauceascu a bully). So, in the case of Saddam, his journey from absolute ruler to absolutely screwed will play out in a world that is more concerned about his toe nail clippings as opposed to the people he tortured, raped, gassed, maimed, beheaded, blinded, castrated, eviscerated, and socially re-engineered.

Herman Goering said that in 50 years after his death little statues of him would be put up all over Germany in celebration of his legacy. Let’s hope that in a post-Saddam world, 50 years from now the only bombings taking place in Iraq will be that of pigeons aiming for the head of all the George Bush statues in front of ex-Saddam palaces.

Comments:
While it is true that Saddam was an evil SOB, we need to respect the Geneva Conventions in order to retain the moral high ground.

True...so we can ask him what part of his body we should stay away from when he's up against the wall for his firing squad!

Interesting but by this logic lets take a look at another person, the hero of the right: George W. Bush.
· Both sanctioned mass murder
At least 22,000 Iraqi civilians killed during 'Iraqi Freedom'

· Both provided material, financial, and political means for mass murder
Bush provides material, financial, and political means to the leader of Uzbekistan who has massacred and boiled alive his own people -- http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,158344,00.html

· Both have denied complicity or responsibility for their involvement in mass murder
Well someone would actually have to have the balls and opportunity to accuse him but that won't stop his administration from trying to conceal it
Iraq's Health Ministry Ordered to Stop Counting Civilian Dead From War

· Both have psychological profiles of crippling dementia, megalomania, recalcitrance, delusions of grandeur, and profound self-deception
Subjective, but there is no doubt that he is out of touch and often exhibits delusions of granduer

· Both demanded to be recognized as legitimate even after capture and incarceration (Saddam has not been put on trial yet – ultimately will be found guilty of all the same crimes as Goering and that lot – Humanity, Peace, etc., unless the case is tried by the Michael Jackson jury!)
Demanding recognition sounds a lot like becoming president after losing both the popular and electoral vote, I would also include calling a 2% victory a 'mandate' a bit deluded.

Now having said all this it is not my intention to say that bush is as bad as Goering. My intention is to point out the hypocricy of piling on about all of saddam husseins ills while endlessly praising Bush as he does the same thing.

Be fair - W has been in office for such a short amount of time, you have to give him a chance to setup a secret police system Felix Dzerzhinsky would envy, build and use chemical weapons on ethnic minorities, bury hundreds of thousands of murdered victims in mass graves, have sons that rape at will and murder the victims, murder members of a soccer team because they disgraced the country, build rape rooms where women and children are tortured in front of their fathers and sons, defy the will of th UN for over fiftenn years. So let's give W some time so your last sentence is correct - 'he is doing the same thing as SH' Nice try Carter!

You know how I feel, its not about how similar they are but that they aren't different enough. As long as you're ok with that we can agree to disagree.

I like your point of view. I really do, and I want to thank you for taking the time to visit this little experiment of mine. It really is fun to do this. Your forthright, honest and unabashedly firm in your beliefs. That's great. Every American should hold strongly to his or her beliefs. It's a shame too many don't. I'd love to read anything you've penned if you have a blog. The best friends I had in college were those who were totally opposite of me politically. Really, they were great to argue with, they always made you really think about your opinion. And Brother, they would demolish you if they found a weakness (likewise on my side). So thanks again and I'll try to keep you and all the other readers entertained. Isn't Free Speech fun?

My grammar is terrible! You're = You Are. My teachers were right when they said 'Do Not Use Contractions.'
